3 Simple Tips for Teaching Rules in Kindergarten
Hey there, teacher friend! One of the most important things we do in our classrooms is teaching our kiddos about the rules. Establishing a clear set of rules can help create a safe and fun learning environment. But let’s be real, teaching rules to our young students can be a challenge! That’s why I’ve put together these three tips to help you teach the rules in kindergarten in a simple, but fun and positive way!
3 Simple Tips for Teaching Rules in Kindergarten
Tip #1: Post Those Rules!
We want our rules to be posted somewhere in our classroom. Ideally, it should be posted in a location that is easy to see and access. We want visual pictures to go along with those rules, to help students fully understand our expectations. When it comes to teaching the rules, it’s important to keep it simple and fun. Use simple kinder lingo, and be sure to SHOW students how to follow the rules and now NOT to follow the rules. You can even use rhymes or songs to help them remember each rule. For example, “We raise our hand to speak, it’s important, don’t you think?” Keep it upbeat and fun so kiddos stay engaged and interested!
Tip #2: Encourage Good Behavior
Encouragement goes a long way in helping kids understand the importance of following the rules. When a student follows a rule, make sure to acknowledge and praise their behavior. Tell them they did a great job, and give them a high-five or a thumbs up. This helps reinforce the importance of following the rules and encourages other students to do the same. (Pssssst! This is where your behavior systems that you set up beforehand come into play!)
Tip #3: Lather, Rinse, Repeat
Repetition is key when teaching the rules in kindergarten. It’s important to review the rules frequently throughout the day, so students can begin to recall and remember them. This is ESPECIALLY true for the beginning of the school year. Review the rules every day for the first 30 days of school and practice them in different situations. For example, when you line up for recess or clean up after an activity. The goal is to have students have those rules memorized by heart!
Final Thoughts on Teaching Rules in Kindergarten
As contradictory as it seems, teaching rules in kindergarten can actually be fun and engaging. By posting your classroom rules, encouraging good behavior, and reviewing the rules on a daily basis, you can help your students understand the importance of following the rules and create a safe and happy learning environment. Remember to make it a game and keep it positive, so the kids stay engaged and interested. I hope these tips help you create a fantastic learning environment for your kindergarteners!
