Apple Activities for Little Learners
We’re officially entering into the month of September, which means all things apples! I love jazzing up my centers and learning areas for each season, and this Apple Activities packet for preschool and kindergarten is the perfect thing to add that extra bit of fall feel to the classroom.
My teammate and I celebrate Johnny Appleseeds birthday with our classes by doing lots of fun apple themed activities with the kids. We send out a note asking parents to send their child to school with their favorite type of apple. Using those apples, we do an apple taste test, apple investigation, and finally we use all the apples to make applesauce! Applesauce Day is one of my FAVORITE days, the kids absolutely love it! I created a recipe as well as visual step-by-step direction cards for this activity as well as cards to do an apple taste test with your class, and it’s all included in this activity packet! Let’s take a sneak preview into the Apple Activities for Little Learners! 🥳
Apple Alphabet Match
Students practice letter recognition by matching the uppercase letter basket to the lowercase apple. This activity also includes the option for you to match uppercase to uppercase.
Tip✨ Try using this activity at a center then use later on as an early finisher activity.
Apple Pom-Pom Color Sorting
Hello fine motor practice! I cannot get enough of multi-skills activities and this one gives all the feels. Hit color recognition, sorting, sight word practice, and fine motor practice, topped off with some apple themes for September!
Tip✨ Grab these tweezers at Lakeshore Learning and the pom-poms at the Dollar Tree. 😍
“Apple, Apple Worm” Alphabet Game
This is a great game to practice letter/sound association while celebrating apples and Johnny Appleseed’s birthday! Kiddos take turns pulling a card and then saying the sound the letter makes. But beware, if you pull a worm card, you have to put all your apples back!
Tip ✨ Try this at a small center run by an adult so they can facilitate the game.
Apple Taste Test
Prior to this activity, be sure to bring in a few red, yellow, and green apples for your students to try. Cut up the apples, and allow students to sample each one. Students then fill out the worksheet and use the apple cards to graph their favorite apple.
Tip ✨Have students write their names on the apples so they can see who liked what kind of apple. It also sneaks in some extra name writing practice!
Classroom Applesauce
My favorite! Follow the instructions for this crockpot applesauce to delight your students on Johnny Appleseed’s birthday! Use the visual cards to include students and they can take part in the cooking process.
Tip✨ Slice the apples and place in the crockpot first thing before students arrive at school. Let it cook throughout the day and later include students with adding the brown sugar and cinnamon (we do this as a small group for our center rotations, allowing students to smell the ingredients). The best part is that your entire classroom will smell like yummy applesauce! 😋
