How to Have a Successful Meet the Teacher Night
Hey there, I’m Katherine Barker, and in this blog post, we’ll explore how to have a successful Meet the Teacher Night. This event, also known as Back to School Night, marks the beginning of the school year, providing a crucial opportunity for parents to understand what their child’s classroom experience will look like. Before diving into the specifics, I want to remind you to breathe. It’s completely normal to feel nervous. You’re an amazing teacher, and those parents are fortunate to have you guiding their child this year.
Seven Tips for a Successful Meet the Teacher Night
1. Sign-in Sheets
First and foremost, have sign-in sheets ready. These should include columns for the parent’s name and the student’s name. This allows you to track attendance and follow up with any important information for those who couldn’t make it. Place this information in the students’ cubbies so parents can access everything they missed.
2. Getting to Know Your Child Forms
Create a questionnaire to learn more about each child. This form should ask for basic information like who the child lives with and any allergies you need to be aware of. Additionally, it should provide space for parents to share more about their child’s personality, fears, or worries. This insight is invaluable for tailoring your approach to each student.
3. Slideshow Presentation
Prepare a slideshow to give an overview of the school year. This should cover the daily schedule, any changes for shortened days, birthday celebrations, homework expectations, and any special projects like the Star of the Week. Include explanations of your behavior management systems so parents understand what their children are referring to when they mention specific rewards or systems.
4. Meet the Teacher Night Packet
Provide a packet that mirrors your slideshow for parents to take home. This packet can include any necessary forms such as waiver forms, photography consent forms, and PTA information. Visual aids, like pictures of your behavior management systems, can help parents better understand your classroom environment. A welcome letter introducing yourself and expressing excitement for the school year sets a positive tone from the start.
5. Donation Apple Tree
If your school permits donations, create a donation apple tree. Draw a tree outline on your whiteboard and stick apple-shaped notes with items you need, such as googly eyes or hand sanitizer. Parents can pick an apple to donate, making it easy for them to contribute to the classroom.
6. Hershey Kisses
Place Hershey Kisses or another small treat on the tables. This small gesture creates a welcoming atmosphere and gives parents something to snack on during your presentation, helping to set a relaxed tone.
7. Authority Figure Trick
One of my mentor teachers shared this trick: placing a jacket over the back of your chair gives off an authority vibe. While I haven’t found any studies to back this up, it worked for me as a confidence booster. It might seem superstitious, but if it helps calm your nerves and boost your confidence, it’s worth a try.
