10 Easy Play-Based Learning Activities For the Busy Elementary Teacher

If you’ve been around here for a minute, you know I am passionate about play-based learning activities — especially in early childhood classrooms.

10 Easy Play-Based Learning Activities for the Busy Elementary Teacher

And can I tell you a little secret?

Taking play out of the classroom doesn’t just make the day less fun — it actually increases behavior issues.

Here’s why 👇

Why Play Matters (Especially for Early Childhood)

When children play, the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for logical thinking and self-control — is working hard and developing. Play builds the exact skills we want our students to have: emotional regulation, empathy, communication, cooperation, and flexible thinking.

It’s literally the work of childhood.

But if you’re anything like me in my early years, you might be thinking:

“This sounds great… but I already have so much on my plate. How am I supposed to add more?”

I get it. I’ve been there.
And that’s exactly why I started creating hands-on, play-based learning activities that hit academic standards and still feel magical, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.

Today, I’m sharing 10 of my favorite activities — all ones I used in my own classroom — to spark inspiration and help you bring more joyful, purposeful play into your day.

And stick around until the end… I have a free activity for you that your kids will LOVE. 💛

1️⃣ Say It • Build It • Count It

Students:

✔️ Say the number
✔️ Build it with manipulatives
✔️ Count it out loud

This boosts fine motor skills, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, and number formation — all in one activity!

2️⃣ Apple Worm

A playful letter-sound game with cards and worms. Students pull a card, say the sound… but if they pull a worm? 🍏🐛

Everything goes back!

This one encourages:

  • Letter/sound recognition
  • Turn-taking
  • Communication
  • Emotional regulation during big feelings moments (like losing those apples 🙃)

3️⃣ Monster Roll & Cover

Grab a tray + googly eyes → instant engagement. Students roll a die, find the matching number, and cover it with a googly eye.

Targets:
✔️ Cardinality
✔️ Number recognition
✔️ Fine motor practice

4️⃣ Pumpkin Pie Letters 🎃

Laminate a mat → add shaving cream → pure sensory joy!

Students:

  • Pull a letter card
  • Form the letter in shaving cream

Important PSA: Remind your little cuties… it’s not whipped cream. (Ask me how I learned this lesson… 😅)

5️⃣ Alphabet Christmas Lights

Students choose a letter, say it, find it, and color it.
Simple, festive, effective.

Skills hit: letter recognition + fine motor strength.

6️⃣ Ice Cube Patterns 🧊

Grab ice cube trays from Dollar Tree → add snap cubes → BOOM:

  • AB patterns
  • AAB patterns
  • Pattern extensions
  • Color recognition
  • Fine motor practice

7️⃣ Sort & Count Conversation Hearts 💕

Food = instant engagement.

Students sort by color, count, and can even read color words. Hits:

✔️ Sorting
✔️ Counting
✔️ Sight words

8️⃣ St. Patrick’s Day Rhyme Sort ☘️

Dog + frog? → Rhyme!
Broom + cat? → Nope!

Fun AND literacy-boosting with a side of sorting practice.

9️⃣ Ladybug Addition

Students roll two dice, count, and place pom-pom spots on a ladybug using tweezers.

Math + fine motor = chef’s kiss. 👌
Modify for number recognition by using one die.

🔟 Flower Build & Count

Flowers with numbers + Unifix cubes = counting stems that grow as high as the number says!

Targets:

✔️ Number recognition
✔️ Building cardinality
✔️ Block stacking fine motor strength
